Engine Tune-ups

69 Chevelle getting a tune-up

So, What Exactly IS an Engine Tune-Up?

Back in the day, a tune-up was a pretty involved affair – adjusting carburetors, setting ignition timing, replacing distributor caps, changing points & rotors... and lots of adjustments. Nowadays, with all the computer controls, it’s more about preventative maintenance and replacing key wear items to keep your engine running at its best.

For most modern vehicles, a tune-up tyically involves the following:

  1. Replacing Spark Plugs: These are crucial for igniting the air-fuel mixture in your engine cylinders. They do wear out over time, which leads to less efficient combustion. When needed, we’ll install new ones recommended for your specific vehicle.
  2. Inspecting (and often Replacing) Ignition System Components: This could include:
    • Spark Plug Wires (if your car has them): They carry the high voltage from the distributor cap to the spark plugs. We check for cracks, wear, and corrosion.
    • Ignition Coils (or Coil Packs): These transform the battery’s low voltage to the high voltage needed by the spark plugs. We’ll inspect them for signs of failure.
  3. Replacing Filters:
    • Air Filter: Your engine needs clean air to breathe. A clogged air filter restricts airflow, hurting performance and fuel economy.
    • Fuel Filter (sometimes): This screens out impurities in your fuel. Not all cars have easily replaceable ones, but if yours does and it’s due, we’ll swap it.
  4. Checking and Adjusting (if applicable): We might also check things like your PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) valve, clean the throttle body if it’s gunked up, and ensure fluid levels are good.
  5. Computer Scan: We’ll often hook up our diagnostic scanner to check for any stored trouble codes that might not have triggered your check engine light yet, but could indicate an emerging issue.

Think of it as a health check-up and rejuvenation for the heart of your car – the engine.

What are the Benefits of Getting a Tune-Up?

Doing regular tune-ups is like giving your engine a new lease on life. You’ll likely notice:

  • Improved Fuel Economy: When your engine is burning fuel efficiently, you'll go further on a tank of gas. New plugs and a clean air filter make a big difference here.
  • Smoother Engine Performance: A well-tuned engine idles smoother and accelerates more evenly. No more sputtering or hesitation.
  • Restored Power and Quicker Acceleration: Fresh plugs and optimal ignition mean your engine can deliver the power it was designed for.
  • Reduced Emissions: Efficient combustion means fewer harmful pollutants coming out of your exhaust pipe. Good for the environment, and helps pass emission testing.
  • Easier Starting: Especially in cold weather, good spark plugs make a difference.
  • Increased Engine Longevity: By keeping these key components in top shape, you reduce strain on your engine and can prevent more serious, and costly problems down the road. For example, a misfiring spark plug can eventually damage your catalytic converter – and that’s a pricey fix!

What Symptoms Might Your Car Show if it Needs a Tune-Up?

Your car usually gives you little signs when it’s time for some maintenance. Keep an ear and feel out for any of these symptoms:

  • Decreased Fuel Mileage: You have to fill up more often than usual.
  • Rough Idling: Your car shakes or the exhaust sound is uneven when you’re stopped at a traffic light.
  • Engine Misfires or Stumbling: You might feel a hesitation, jerking, or hear a “sputtering” sound, especially when accelerating.
  • Difficulty Starting: The engine cranks longer than usual before starting, or it struggles to turn over.
  • “Check Engine” Light: This is a big one. While it can mean many things, tune-up related issues (like a misfiring plug) are common culprits.
  • Lack of Power or Sluggish Acceleration: Your car feels like it’s lost its get-up-and-go.
  • Engine Knocking or Pinging: Though less common with modern engine controls, it can sometimes indicate old plugs or poor combustion.
  • Stalling: In more severe cases, the engine might stall out.

So, if you’re noticing any of those things, or if it’s just been a good while (check your owner’s manual for recommended intervals, often between 30,000 to 100,000 miles depending on the vehicle and plug type), it’s probably a good idea to bring it in. We can take a look, run some diagnostics, and let you know exactly what your ride needs to get it back to running like new.
